Good point about 'company' men. My father is of this sort. My father will not talk to us because he has to be a good example to the congregation since he is an elder. Getting an education beyond high school teaches you to have a personal and social conscience, neither of which 'company' men have. Someone with a personal conscience would not allow an organization to come between them and their blood family. WT teaches organizational conscience and tries to convince rank and file that this conscience is based on scriptural principles when in fact this conscience is based on GB whim.

Just curious
by pratt1 in.
since this is the 4th of july weekend, do any of you display the american flag in or around you home?.
i have to admit, although i have been faded for many years, i find it difficult to even own anything with the american flag symbol.

I have mixed feelings about patriotism. There are so many people who elevate patriotism to worship. While I personally value freedom granted to my by this country more than I ever have before, I am not pleased with the way some of our political leaders use patriotism in a fashion similar to the way JWs used their Bibles. The world doesn't need more excuses for oppression and it seems that since 9/11, patriotism has been used in such a way.
However, we are going to celebrate Independence Day this year, complete with fireworks and a BBQ, but without a flag (of course, we live in the middle of nowhere, nearest neighbor's house is 3-miles away so no one would see if we had a flag or not). Independence Day this year means so much more because of our fight for freedom of speech (Rocky was DF'd for speaking about the Silentlambs issue) and our consequent independence from all things WT.

We are celebrating Independence Day on Sunday, July 3, which is also my birthday - Independence being a double meaning. We are celebrating Rocky being DF'd (a few weeks ago) and thought it appropriate to celebrate the holiday and my birthday at the same time. We have about a dozen friends coming over for a BBQ, a couple of them are also xJWs. We will be setting off some fireworks, still legal here in rural Easterna Washington. This will be Rocky's first time celebrating the 4th of July holiday. Happy holidays! - Mrs R

JW women focused on appearance!
by Sirona init really gets on my nerves.. jw women used to be always focused, as their number one thing, on appearance.
they could be crap at the rest of the jw stuff, but if they turned up at the meeting dressed nice, thin, long hair, looking nice, all was forgiven.
of course it was because of the misogyny (sp?

My sister and I danced at Bon Odori when we were kids! had a great time...great food too! We had new kimonos almost every year. We stopped going when my older brother started studying seriously with the dubs, I was about 8 years old. Wish I lived closer - it's a great event!

by minimus inthe local needs talk on thursday discussed a few different things, according to my mom.
but the one that stood out most was that he announced that based on the new book, the elders will be checking on those that have not been associating with the congregation for some time.

We're having trouble defining a possible legal course. It is our belief that they did not follow proper procedure, but we've been inactive for 7 years so don't have first hand knowledge of any policy changes. We are familiar with corporate law here in Washington State, but without a copy of the local congregation's by laws, we have no way of knowing if they have violated State law either. So if you have any info or ideas, we'd be glad to hear them!

I'm not sure that headquarters is directing the big push to 'clean' the congregations. I do know that the local body of elders here where I live have their own personal agenda. I'm sure that recent correspondence from Bethel has fueled this local agenda. But, be sure that, if you piss them off, they will get rid of you...and there is no correct answer to their question, unless you grovel at their feet and go back to living in their box. Mr. Rocky was disfellowshipped this week for 1) not meeting with their kangaroo court 2) pointing out they don't follow the Bible (Matt 18) in resolving problems in the congregation 3) speaking about the pedophile issue. They didn't even bother telling him he has been disfellowshipped - news came from my sis who lives 300 miles away, who heard it from my dad, also 300 miles away, who heard it from my brother, and then confirmed locally by Mr. Rocky's mom! No registered letter, no phone call - just the bum's rush to get the announcement to the congregation. By the way, we haven't attended meetings for about 7 years, not even memorial. But the timing coincides with the recent death of the PO, who was well liked and our business partner. Wasn't even a week after the memorial service at the KH when the new PO called. I'm planning a post in the near future to tell our story - it's a real kicker!
